Elder Rights

Elder Rights are a set of principles and laws that protect the safety and dignity of senior citizens, aging Baby Boomers, and the elderly against elder abuse, senior scams, and financial fraud. The increasing need of senior citizens to rely on family, friends, and caregivers for their well-being can often lead to abusive behavior that takes advantage of a person's vulnerability. Critical thinking skills may be impaired or diminished to the point that a person's trust in another may lead to a variety of decisions that are not in the financial or emotional best interest of the older adult.

The Federal government, states, and local communities offer support programs that are designed to protect seniors and help them:

  • Understand and exercise their rights
  • Exercise choice through informed decision-making
  • Benefit from support and opportunities promised by law
  • Maintain autonomy consistent with capacity
  • Resolve grievances and disputes through appropriate representation and assistance
