From Life Done Right SeniorWiki
Universal design (UD) is a concept that defines a philosophy for designing products, services, architecture, and environments around human diversity. Universal Design anticipates how age, physical disabilities, or a health condition may restrict or severely limit a person's natural ability to carry out their daily living activities. Good universal design succeeds when it enables a person to live independently and comfortably within their home or work environment. Universal design is also sometimes referred to as barrier-free design.
Key principles of universal design include:
- Equitable Use: The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities;
- Flexibility in Use: The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities;
- Simple and Intuitive: Use of the design is easy to understand regardless of the user's experience, knowledge, language skills, or concentration level;
- Perceptible Information: The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of the user's sensory abilities; and
- Low Physical Effort: The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue.
